What a week we just had. From the BYU independence announcement, to the Utes overtime thriller over Pittsburgh, to BYU's legendary quarterbacks all coming back to campus, to the Cougars impressive win over Washington, to Utah State nearly shocking the world at Oklahoma. Football season is here, and I'm loving it.
But what did we learn?
Well, we learned Utah has a flare for the dramatic. That game against Pittsburgh should never have been that close. Then again, with three turnovers, 11 penalties and a blocked punt, maybe Utah should never have been in the game. Either way you look at it, if the Utes can beat the Big East favorite by playing that inconsistently, the future looks very bright. Just as long as Jordan Wynn's thumb problem doesn't become a lingering problem.
I couldn't believe my own eyes when I saw Riley Nelson and Jake Heaps rotating every single series for BYU against Washington. How could either quarterback ever get into a rhythm? Well, at least for one game, it worked. But I just don't see Bronco Mendenhall keeping this up all season long. I realize defenses have to spend more time preparing for two different style offenses, but more times than not the offense just looked confused against the Huskies. Let's be clear about this, the defense and special teams won the game. The offense helped by not committing any turnovers, but it's going to have to be much more dynamic than what it showed Saturday in order to contend for a conference title.
And how about Utah State? That was by far the most shocking game of the week. Not only did the Aggies hang with the mighty Sooners, but they had several opportunities to tie the game. After what BYU and Utah State did to his team the last two years, I bet Bob Stoops wouldn't schedule Weber State at this point.
All in all, it was an extremely entertaining start to the season. Now, we'll see if the Utes, Cougars and Aggies can all keep this momentum going.
