Billionaire Nebraskan Warren Buffett has just written a check to the U.S. Treasury for $49,000.

Back taxes? Fine? Campaign donation?

None of the above.

It was to pay down the national debt.

Too bad that at the rate we're racking up debt in this county, it was probably spent before some bureaucrat ripped open the envelope.

Warren Buffett's estimated net worth is $50-billion. The sick fact is we could empty out his entire bank account and it wouldn't fill up the monstrous fiscal hole our elected officials have dig for us.

And what if we didn't just pick on Buffett? What if we emptied out every rich guy's account -- left them all penniless? Nope, the hole is still there.

Not even Romney's accounts in the Cayman Islands would do it.

The national debt is $15,2 trillion.

A $49,000 check is a nice publicity stunt. (He said he would match any payment made by Republicans. Congressman Scott Rigell, (R) Virginia, donates 15% of his salary every year to the pay down the debt.)

Even so, his $49,000 is like one grain of sand tossed in the ocean. It won't make a beach.
