Apparently there are a lot of people with strong opinions about cell phones and driving.

Who knew?

Here's a sampling of the responses I'm getting along with my wonderfully ironic commentary.  (It is my blog, after all...)

Miguel Le Demokrat Martinez:

I almost went off the road a year ago while texting.. I believe in the ban.. I've seen people steering with their knee while holding a burger in one hand and a drink in the other.. NTSB has a great argument!

Me:

What argument?  The NTSB bureaucrats ignored some of their own statistics that indicate there is no a pervasive problem in need of a legislative solution.  Again, anecdotal evidence alone makes for bad policy.

I do believe you about the texting thing. (Why would you lie to make yourself look bad?) And certainly you should critically assess what you can and cannot do as a safe and responsible driver.

It also sounds like you're advocating not just a ban on cell phones in the car, but also drinks, burgers and perhaps even fries.  I would never survive that!

Rob Avery

Those who desire a nanny state to make their decisions for them deserve one.

Me

Rob, you're scaring me.

I almost t-boned a lady today who pulled out right in front of me. Had to stand on the brakes. She was on her cell. I don't even think she even saw me. That was this morning.

Me

That is frightening!  And she could be cited and perhaps even charged with a misdemeanor under current law in Utah.  Sounds like an argument for "photo cop."

Spring Johnson

But I am not okay with the government having even more control over our every move. Peeps just need to drive responsibly.

Me

Individual responsibility.  Hummmm... It could work... If only government could figure out a way to force everyone to be responsible.  Yes... mandatory personal responsibility!

People will drive stupid no matter what. It has been proven that bans on cell phone use does not stop people from using them. They just look down so they don't get caught. I have seen many people run lights and slam into the back of people and various other accidents where cell phones did not exist. Miguel: don't hold your breath. The legislators do not want to be banned from their cell phones either. I never text and drive and it is illegal. However, I do talk on my cell but my primary attention is on my driving. Some people are stupid and careless and some aren't. Cell phones are not the cause.

Me

You mean people are already stupid? Cell phones didn't make them that way?

Miguel Le Demokrat Martinez

It will pass one day.. Give it time..

Marsha Bentley

Never happen.

Miguel Le Demokrat Martinez

Want to bet $10,000 dollars? lol (Mitt humor)

Me

Miguel, you have just shown by your bet that you are out of touch with the common man. (Me humor) ;)

Albert Johnson

get the government out of our pockets quit making laws to take away more freedom.

Me

Can I get an amen, anyone?

Cara Hollingshead Jones

I'm probably more dangerous with my Taco Bell...

Me

Carl's Jr. is my weakness.  And it's burgers really are as messy as the commercials show -- especially in a car.  Don't bother me, I'm eating!

Jacquelyn Meyers

If there were equal punishments to meet the crimes, you wouldn't need to ban anything--people would take more responsibility naturally. This is where the problem truly lies, if you ask me.

Mark Mattice

Cell ban hands free ok

Me

I think I understand your shorthand...

Wess Roberts

Why not ban talking to passengers in your car? Listening to the radio? Eating and drinking? Putting on makeup should still be allowed though.

Me

I could not have said it better myself.  Oh, wait, I did say that in my original blog.  In which case, great minds thing alike!

Becky Isais

While we're at it let's ban stupid people from sharing DNA & adding to the overpopulation of stupid people.

Me

You're just kidding, right.  I love sarcasm, Becky, but even I miss it sometimes.

Please say you're kidding, because that idea was called EUGENICS. It was a truly perverse "science" espoused by some "well-meaning progressives" of another century, including some with swastikas on their sleeves.

Well Brent, Deux (French for Two (2)), is spelled Deux, NOT DUEX! Get rid of that polygamist mind-set, would ya!? ;) I'm fluent in French. I heard a year or so ago that there were cell-phones that sensed when they were moving faster than a human can walk and would send calls to voice-mail automatically without ringing the cell-phone. I think this is a great idea, as when I get a call on mine while I'm driving, I rarely answer, and ONLY when there's nobody close by, and tell them I'll call them once I'm out of my car. Otherwise I ignore the call. I know this instinct isn't built into stay-at-home moms in Utah, they just have TOO MUCH GOSSIP TO SPREAD AROUND... Kill their phones! Once the poligivans are moving without disruption, and their husbands aren't replying "Yes dear, Yes dear!" , "traffic" in this state will disappear!
