Barb’s Blog: Fried everything!

Several years ago I was at Disney World covering a story for ABC 4 when I was introduced to a delicacy I could never have imagined. The chef at the restaurant took a special interest in our table and said he would create a special dish for us for desert. We were intrigued and excited. He arrived at our table with lovely little round puffs of heaven, coated in hot fudge sauce and whip cream. Hidden inside the lightly browned batter was a familiar favorite; an Oreo cookie.

Yep, it was a fried Oreo. It appeared on my plate long before it showed up at the Utah State Fair. I was highly skeptical and realized there was the very real possibility it would clog my arteries and I might die right then and there at the table in Florida. One bite and I decided I had already died and gone to heaven! It’s kind of hard to describe, but the Oreo softens, the cream in the middle melts just enough to become soft, and the whole thing becomes a wonderful texture. The batter isn’t overly greasy because it fried at high heat. The cream and fudge topping make it delicious.

Fried Oreos are probably not for everyone, nor are fried Twinkies, fried Snicker bars, fried Coke, or fried Lemonade. But, I have to say when the State Fair rolls around I am one of those that you will find in line to see what they are frying this year, and will likely try it.

The exception is the latest in fried food innovations just unveiled at the Texas State Fair, fried beer. Think I will stick to the Oreos. But I am a little in awe that they have figured out a way to fry beer. You can apparently fry just about everything.
