Three things. Los Mortales... That book is trash, it in no way accurately or remotely portrays the beliefs of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter day saints. Even if at one point he were a member, he would definitely have been excommunicated. He "called"his self a "Mormon" (which by the way is a nickname given to members, NOT the name of the church), i can call myself an astronaut, but it will never make me one! I encourage you and all reading seek accurate information, please, search Lds.org, Mormon.org, or talk to a practicing member. I am a member and am unshakable in my love for and faith in my lord and savior Jesus Christ. Second: maybe a bit much hype on a simple thing, I'm sure the intent was not to make Ms. Goldberg embarrassed or put anyone in their place; but I'm glad the truth could be told. My pops got his mission call The Day After his draft notice arrived. He is a proud Vietnam Vet! Third- please people, remember this election isn't a religious battle! It's who can pull the economy or of the crapper and re secure our nations place in the world! I don't care if their agnostic, lower my taxes, save our small contractor company, bring our boys home!!

Obama is a mere mortal who lies because, well, that's what mortals do. Romney thinks he is a junior varsity god, and he lies because he thinks that we wouldn't understand the truth. To gain an existential understanding of the cult that produced Mitt Romney, and to get your socks scared off, read The Assassination of Spiro Agnew, available in paperback and e-book on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=...search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=The+Assassination+of+Spiro+Agnew Its unwilling, part-Mexican Mormon assassin dramatizes the Mormon superiority complex, manifesting it as racism, sexism, jingoism and an anti-federal government temperament. His research in the new library reveals ominous similarities between Islam and Mormonism. The spiritual power behind the cult, which is not the Holy Ghost, acts out. "With a clarity of language and vision unsurpassed in contemporary American prose, Steven Janiszewski's Assassination of Spiro Agnew takes us into a U.S. mazed with madness and Mormonism and all things Utah, a U.S. that was then and still is. Do we need a novel, even as brilliant as this one, about a young man on a divine mission to assassinate the Vice President because he is too liberal? Yes, now more than ever. Readers, welcome to a masterpiece." Tom Whalen www.tomwhalen.com Read The Assassination of Spiro Agnew.

I think the comments on this story are so interesting. Instead of addressing the graceful way that Ann Romney handled this accusation, and attempt to make her husband seem unsupportive of US military, people commenting are using this section to let us all know their political inclinations and insult each other for differing opinions on politics. Regardless of your political affiliation, you can't deny that Ann Romney was direct, kind and well spoken. She wasn't defensive, arrogant, or insulting to Whoopi who was obviously trying to make a point about Mitt Romney... that wasn't true and was meant to make him look poorly. I will say that Whoopi's tone wasn't openly rude, but the 'body bags' description was insulting to parents/spouses/family of those that do have loved ones taken and lost in the conflict. It was bad form for her and she's better than that. I flinched at Whoopi's comment and I don't have loved one's that are deployed. Ann has 5 son's. For someone to say that at some point the idea of a son going to war hasn't crossed her mind, would have a very insular view of the world...especially since we all know that a draft could be necessary/implemented at any time with the evidence of many, many conflicts around the world. Women need to support each other even if our opinions on politics and other issues differ. If we can't maintain some solidarity about civility and moral high ground in how we treat each other, how can we improve the conflict and injustices affecting women and families in the world?

"Whoopi shut down by Ann Romney"? PL-LEASE! If anything Whoopi's question has brought [back] to light another Romney flaw. This article is a joke, the "writer" really reached to find something [anything] to make the Romney's look respectable...It not only backfired, but made abc4.com look pretty marginal in allowing this piece of "work" to post on this site. Are the real writers on strike or something?

Too bad so many folks seem to be haters regarding Whoopi's whoops. I am old enough to remember when " slick willie clinton" went to England so he wouldn't be drafted. By the way Mitt's mission was for 2 1/2 years not the 18 months some one cited. I too grew up in the '60's -I'm a few months younger than Mitt. I received deferments to attend college and then served a 2 year mission. Had to board the bus in Provo the day after I got home to go to SLC due a low draft lottery number. I had a heart defect so they classified me as 4-F so I could not serve. I had a number of good friends and guys I went to school with who went to Vietnam. Too many of did come back in body bags

The point is not how many deferments Gov. Romney received or that President Obama was too young to serve in Vietnam. It's the fact the Republican nominee organized a demonstration as a freshman at Stanford University in support of the Vietnam War and the draft. If Gov. Romney felt that strongly about America's mission in Vietnam why didn't he sign up and go to Southeast Asia instead of holding up a sign and demanding others go? In a radio interview, Gov. Romney's brave, oldest son said the day after the second debate that he wanted to "take a swing at the President". He also said his father was "terrified" before the debates. He then quickly softened his words to say his father had "butterflies." That explains a lot. Brave Americans (like my father-in-law and sister's husband) overcame their butterflies and signed up to serve their country fighting wars they believed in. Others, like the Romney's, serve their country fighting the fear of flopping during debates.

In reference to Mitt Romney not having served, some of you need to do some research. Mr. Romney was granted a total of four (4) deferments by his Selective Service Board, three (3) for college and one (1) while he served as a Missionary. These deferments were just like those granted to many others. After his fourth deferment, he was subject to the draft lottery, which was implemented in 1969. His number was over 300 and he was not drafted. I happen to know this as I too was in the first lottery and my number would also not have been called. As a veteran, I find it hippocritical to mis-quote, mis-state and otherwise imply that Mr. Romney some how used his family or status to circumvent the system.

Coming home in "bags"?? From "wars"??? I'm not LDS, and I'm not a Romney supporter. But this "lady" Whoopi is one disgraceful, ignorant person.

Romney continuosly supports sending us/others to war. He was of age during the draft era and avoid service. There were no wars or draft during Obama's years of eligibility. Romney nor his cowardly son ever felt a need to serve, yet Romneys more than willing to send other son and daughters to wars. Obama wants to end our war involvement, Romney wants to increase it.
