SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A wheechair bound man is dead after being hit at the intersection of 700 East and 3065 South in Salt Lake .

59-year old Raymond Nielson died at the scene of the accident.  He was crossing 700 East when a Northbound driver hit him. Nielsen was homeless, according to Unified police, but witnesses tell ABC 4 News that he rode through the neighborhood frequently on his wheelchair visiting his uncle and brother.

Police say the driver of the car left the crash but returned a short time later. Apparently the driver was unaware that he had hit a man in his wheelchair.

Officers say the impact was so forceful that the wheelchair was smashed to bits.

The driver has not yet been charged, pending the investigation, which will take several weeks to wrap up.
