SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – You’re one step closer to riding a TRAX trail to the Salt Lake City airport.
Crews are testing the trains along North Temple out to 1500 the Salt Lake City airport, but the trains are only moving at a walking pace.
The testing is a welcome sight to businesses along the TRAX line. The Red Iguana is famous for its Mexican dishes.
“It is awesome,” said Dotty Riley. “What's the best thing here?” replied Noah Bond. “I think the Shirley beef chimichangas,” replied Riley.
The restaurant sits along the 700 West Block on North Temple near the soon to open TRAX line. “It should help business a lot,” said customer Joey Riley.
Crews demolished the North Temple Viaduct about two years ago to replace the structure with a TRAX line.
“That was probably the hardest for us when the bridge wend down,” Red Iguana Owner, Lucy Cardenas.
Most businesses west of the bridge along North Temple took a hit.
“Our business really persevered thanks to our wonderful customers. They kept us in business all this time they were very supportive,” said Cardenas.
The new bridge opened last summer in August and the Red Iguana survived. The future will likely get better when the new TRAX line opens. It will carry travelers from the Salt Lake City International Airport.
Utah taxpayers forked out $350 million to build the six miles of TRAX line, connecting the airport to downtown Salt Lake City. State lawmakers are betting the funding will bring even more prosperity to Utah.
The TRAX line to the airport is scheduled to open April 14. It will cost riders $2.35 to catch a flight to and from the airport from any location on the TRAX line system.
