SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - If you ride TRAX or FrontRunner, UTA wants to get your attention. UTA tells ABC 4 too many people are getting hurt from accidents involving trains, cars and pedestrians in Utah. So, Tuesday UTA is making an extra effort to educate riders to be safe.
UTA said crashes are happening too often. January 3, 2012 a train crushes a car at a railroad crossing in West Jordan. Nine days later a 40-year-old man is side swiped by a train in South Salt Lake; all in all 15 crashes in last 12 months.
"We want to prevent the number of accidents we've been having," said Gerry Carpenter, UTA spokesperson.
Tuesday UTA is going one by one. They're educating both riders and drivers about the possible dangers of UTA TRAX stations.
"It's really easy to avoid incidents if you observe safe behaviors and stay away from the danger zone," said Carpenter.
UTA Staff are encouraging pedestrians to look both ways, step back, and be alert. If you're behind the wheel, stop at the flashing lights and wait to go until the crossing arms are up.
ABC talked to riders who spoke with staff to find out if they’re getting the message.
"I never really think about it when I have my iPod in, it does obstruct your hearing, so that's probably a tip to keep up," said Whitney Hinckley, TRAX rider.
"Apparently we've had enough accidents that people need a refresher course," said Nicholas Chambers, TRAX rider.
"You just got to be careful when you're out there, keep your eyes open and be aware of your surroundings," said Jeff Kaderli, TRAX rider.
UTA hopes people remember those ideas, the next time they're near a TRAX station.
