PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 News) – Keeping roads clear and drivers safe is priority number one for the Utah Department of Transportation. They’re investing in their goals with the latest technology.

UDOT Spokesperson Muriel Xochimitl explained how the Fixed Automated Spray Technology works. "This is the computer system that monitors the censors and can give the pavement conditions and atmospheric conditions,” said Xochimitl.

There are actual censors built into the roadway and when the pavement gets to a certain temperature or if there's a high level of precipitation the system actually sprays out a de-icing fluid automatically.

Xochimitl said, "The censors themselves are located on the shoulder of the road and also in the center of the median."

In three areas across the state, and a forth one currently on the way, UDOT has installed a FAST system. In Provo, at the bridge near Deer Creek Damn and by State Route 92, UDOT has two of the systems in place.

"This type of technology is a significant investment so we put it in areas where we need it most,” explained Xochimitl.

At the bridge at Deer Creek the technology is needed year around, because if the conditions are right the bridge can ice over any time of the year.

Xochimitl said, “Given the bridge is close to the lake and the humidity, if it's high, can contribute to icy conditions even when it's not winter time.”

Despite all the salt solution out on the roadway here out over this bridge they say because of the freezing temperatures, they have had plenty of accidents. So they're asking drivers to be cautious and slow down.
