Insurance companies don’t provide Residential Inpatient treatment for Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). My wife went to the Center for Change in Orem, Utah for Anorexia. She was suffering from Refeeding Syndrome which can cause sudden death, seizures, comma, and heart attacks. Once she was treated for Refeeding Syndrome for only 2 weeks, she entered the Residential Inpatient for 8 days diagnosed with EDNOS then denied continued treatment. In the United States, the average Residential treatment is 90 days. Sometimes treatment for 6 months or more is required. She is now home suffering with all the symptoms of Anorexia, except the weight requirement. Women throughout their lives oscillate between Anorexia and EDNOS. EDNOS is also a serious mental condition. The Nightline article is the first I’ve seen about EDNOS (thank you, ABC News), but not acknowledged by insurance companies. While she was in Residential treatment, supposedly her insurance company was treating her for drug abuse and other mental disorders, not EDNOS or for an eating disorder. Unlike most women that have struggled with eating disorders for say 3-10 years, my wife has struggled with it for 48 years. She is afraid that she may die with this disorder.
