One big key to success is keeping the cell phone in the backpack. Of course it's a good idea to have one for an emergency but laptops, cell phones can all take away from teh benefits of being outdoors.
Our culture is changing, today kids spend only between 15-25 minutes a day outdoors! That's a far cry from their parents and grandparents. As you might guess, instead of being outside, kids are on cell phones, computers adn watching TV which leads to less social interaction.
Researchers will say as important as it is to stay "connected" it's equally as important to spend plenty of time "dis-connected." There's no excuse for not getting out there for a quick hike. Utah literally has hundreds of miles of backcountry and trails for us to explore.
