SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Scrap metal thieves are now targeting car owners – stealing their catalytic converters and costing them thousands.

With a saw in hand, thieves can take off your vehicles' catalytic converter in just under two minutes and it can happen in broad daylight

"I thought I was fine in the broad daylight on Friday at my workplace and obviously you're not,” explained one victim.

The owner of the brand new, Dodge 3500 didn't want to share her name with us, but wanted to share her story so other car owners can beware because this isn't the first time someone has tried to steal the expensive exhaust parts. In fact, Dodge in Sandy has seen nearly half a dozen cars that have had their stolen catalytic converter stolen in the last month.

"My truck was just here a month ago and they didn't get the whole catalytic converter,” explained the woman. “I had to pay to have all the wiring reattached. I had to pay out of my pocket."

This time it's going to cost her insurance company close to $10,000 dollars to replace the stolen parts and the thieves they're getting just a fraction of that.

"They are getting $200 when they're turning this in for scrap metal...that's it!”

Pass a law saying deadly force is justified to stop property theft. After the first few scumbag thieves get taken out, watch crime drop.
