SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – While turkey and gravy may be on your plate Thursday, hundreds of homeless people in Salt Lake enjoyed the classic Thanksgiving meal early.
"We served over 1,700 meals today," said Chris Croswhite, Rescue Mission of Salt Lake, Executive Director.
From turkey to pie, the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake gave those less fortunate a meal with all the trimmings. While it may only look like a plate of warm food, mission director Chris Croswhite said it's much more.
"What we want to do is have the homeless realize they do have things in their life that they can be thankful for, and being grateful for what they have builds hope, and as our homeless friends have more and more hope they'll have a desire to change their life," said Croswhite.
That's what happened to volunteer Steve Fredericks.
"Four years ago I came to Salt Lake, I actually came through the line for the Thanksgiving dinner, joined the program and since got my life back together," said Steve Fredericks, helped with Wednesday’s Thanksgiving meal.
Although many here don't wish to say it themselves, ABC 4 is told Wednesday’s simple meal is inspiring them for good.
"It's amazing on how many of our homeless friends have stopped to specifically say thank you and to wish us a happy Thanksgiving," said Croswhite.
What you just read can be heart warming, but all the good the Rescue Mission did Wednesday comes at a cost. ABC 4 is told the mission used all its food for the Thanksgiving meal, and Christmas is just over a month away. If you have any food or money you'd like to donate to the mission, they could use it.
