NEW YORK, (ABC4 News) - Tuesday revealed damage from Hurricane Sandy that people on the East Coast never expected.

Some are still shaken by the storm’s force.

“We saw the river coming toward us and it actually looked like something out of a movie,” Nana Visitor, an NYC resident, said.

Sandy left behind more than just destruction on the East Coast. Hundreds of families are devastated.

New York and New Jersey were hit the hardest. Dozens of people had to be rescued.

“I couldn't do anything about it,” an unidentified man rescued from water said. “It just kept on pouring in. It was all over the place - under windows, on the sides.”

Flames spread across dozens of homes sparked by an electrical fire in Queens.

“I heard there's about 30 houses that went on fire down there, and at Rockaway, also they had the harbor light burned down, and they had six houses on 134th street,” Donald Ryan said.

A total of 80 homes were destroyed by the fire.

“All night, looking out the window, I could see all the glows in the sky. It looked like the blitz or something was going on,” Richard Kohlbrecher said.

The water flooded out thousands, destroying lives and belongings.

“We lost everything right now,” John Rentas said. “I never thought it would happen like this though."

Millions of people are left in the dark and now have the daunting task of cleaning up.

“I guess everybody just thought that nothing was going to happen,” Frank Nagy said.
