RICHFIELD, Utah (ABC4 News) – A letter, considered racist and offensive, was posted on several homes warning people of a black family relocating to the area.
The letter is addressed to concerned citizens. It tells residents that a family of “African Americans” will soon move into the neighborhood.
Parts of the letter also read, “We realize this causes alarm for a few citizens,” and “If you have any issues or concerns with this families intrusion, there is a petition at the Richfield City Courthouse.”
Tiffany Nay is a Richfield resident who received the letter on her door Tuesday.
“It’s insulting, horrible and it makes our town look bad,” Nay said. “I was very surprised that there are people in the area that would do something like this.”
Nay and other neighbors were upset with the letter, but realized it had to be a joke.
Richfield City Police said the letter is fake. It did not come from anyone related to or working on behalf of Richfield City, Richfield City Neighborhood Watch, or Richfield City Police Department.
A black and white image of a person captured on home surveillance video may be the person behind the letter.
ABC4 News reporter Cristina Rendon showed the letter to others in the community.
“It’s disgusting,” Stacey Rhodes said. “It’s not how we raise our kids here.”
Others said the messenger should have never posted the letter on doors.
“It kind of seemed like a cruel joke, but it’s not funny because Richfield isn’t like that,” Mandy Allen said.
Nay agrees.
“I don’t agree with it and I don’t think somebody should have done that, joke or not,” she added.
