SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is losing a record number of its membership. A new report quotes an LDS general authority who said more members are falling away today than any time in the past 175 years.

At meetings like General Conference, Utahns may be used to seeing members of the LDS Church show up in record numbers. But according to a recent Reuters article citing LDS General Authority Marlin K. Jensen, for the church as a whole, the record in going in a different direction.

Elder Jensen told the news outlet times have changed, and "attrition has accelerated in the last five or 10 years." Some church members ABC 4 talked to said they see the faithful leaving.

"I'm from Chile and a lot of people just stop attending, they take it a little bit too casual," said Francisco Jerez, LDS Church member.

So how bad is it getting? Right now there are more than 14 million members of the church worldwide. But according to the article, sociologists estimate active membership may as few as only five million.

Elder Jensen told Reuters that's the biggest departure since before the days of Brigham Young.

"If people are leaving it's really a mark that maybe we need to get deeper into our faith," said Ross Booth, LDS Church member.

"When life is going good and we don't have as many challenges we don't turn to God," said Babbi Hill, LDS Church member.

These members said it doesn't worry them about the church.

"I know the church is going to continue to grow and develop," said Booth.

But it is a wake up call to be their brother's keeper.

"It does come down to us as members of the church to do our part," said Jerez.

And LDS leaders are hoping they bring their friends back.

The LDS church declined to comment on the article. But Elder Jensen told Reuters, the church is attempting to reach out to the less-active church members, update its manuals on sensitive church doctrines, and improve the amount of accurate information about the church on the internet.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is True!!! I am so glad to be a part of a church that teaches real values, and true doctrine and doesn't change their doctrine according to what is currently popular and on trend with the world. I am a member and am so glad that I can be a disciple of Jesus Christ. ;)

I am a Latter-day Saint who is inactive. I am proud of my religious heritage & will always identify as Mormon. But if you want me to attend church, wear my garments, attend temple, read Scripture...then we need Reformism in the Church! We need to be more like Reform Jews. They are accepted in the Jewish community? but hold liberal views. We also need to OWN our beliefs! Why are we so embarrassed by what we believe? "Stick to the basics." our bishops tell us. NO! Lastly, we must accepts gays!

Regarding the "true history" of the church, Boyd K. Packer quoted, "some things that are true are not very useful." This sounds like the doctrine for crooked used car salesmen. " Take a look at this wonderful car. It is dent free, polished and shiny, a magnificent specimen of a vehicle. Just don't look under the hood, as there is no engine." LDS teaching manuals contain the dent free, polished and shiny version of the church. While a good research of true church reveals, there is not engine.

I understand that this has become a popular venue for former members to share their stories of disenchantment. Personally, I can relate - I remember feeling somewhat betrayed when I began to learn more about Church history. But, in the end, my faith is founded on the Book of Mormon (and I have read View of the Hebrews, the Spaulding Manuscript, etc.) and the testimony I received from God of its truthfulness. I don't understand polygamy, polyandry (although, as an aside, polyandry is a less convincing argument against Joseph Smith than polygamy - if you are merely manipulating people for your own sexual appetite, why would you opt to share women with other men than just have all the women you want to youself via polygamy? Just a thought) and other things but that does not shake my faith in the Book of Mormon because my faith in it does not come from mere logic or a belief in Joseph Smith. It comes from God. As another aside, recent theories that Sidney Rigdon wrote the Book of Mormon also fail logically: If Rigdon were the mastermind, why would he be content to sit back and let Joseph take all the glory and hog the spotlight? I know it sounds trite, but I sincerely invite everyone who reads this to read and pray about the Book of Mormon. I would not have converted from Judaism in my youth if it were not for an answer to my prayer.

I myself lost faith in the Mormon church about 11 months ago. The church is painted a nice picture when being taught the white washed history, but anyone who does any research on the internet will find the church is lying to them.

Never make grandiose claims that can be refuted later on, a hard lesson the Church will learn. I was mislead and never told about the peep stone, the black hat, a book named the View of the Hebrews, the true reason behind the Joseph Smith tar and feathering, the polyandry and polygamy practiced by Joseph Smith, and the many versions of the first vision. The list goes on, and on and on... But the greatest lie ever told can be found here: http://whatmormonsbelieve.org/mormon_books.html

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has one thing strongly working against its membership growth: it's a false religion. With thousands of internet sites proclaiming the truth about Mormonism it is increasingly difficult for Mormon missionaries to present their one-sided, dishonest views of the church. You can't fool all of the people all of the time.
