New details about bomb wielding suspect in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Salt Lake City police shut down Main Street from 200 South to 400 South for two hours Thursday as a bomb wielding suspect named Anthony Mayhew erratically threatened to detonate a bomb in his backpack with a device in his hand that was connected with wires in his backpack.

"He looked like a normal guy. I just think it's crazy that something like that could happen," said Lisa Park.

She like many other people are shocked to learn Mayhew's device in his backpack was confirmed by police Friday to be explosive.

Police began negotiations with Mayhew sometime after 9:10 p.m. when the first 911 calls were made. He talked police on his cell phone for about two hours, but the talks crumbled a little before 11:00 p.m. and Mayhew walked toward police.

"The police realized this was an imminent threat and told him more than one time repeatedly stop in a low enough voice clearly enough that he could hear under the circumstances. He didn't stop he continued to proceed towards the police," said McGowan.

An officer fired a single shot killing Mayhew. His motionless body was on the ground as two robots removed and detonated his backpack.

"They pulled him up. The whole time they were giving him CPR. They pulled him in the ambulance. They were giving him CPR on the ambulance," said Nour Alagha.

Police taped off the area until about 6:00 p.m. Friday. Their investigation about why Mayhew refused to follow police order continues.
