SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has scrapped plans to build a high-rise building near a Provo neighborhood, after controversy arose over how church officials gained support from residents who had previously opposed the construction project.

The Church has issued the following statement regarding the previously-announced nine-story building at the Provo Missionary Training Center. The statement was attributed to Michael Purdy, spokesperson for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:

“There has been a great deal of discussion regarding the Church’s proposal to construct a new building at the Provo Missionary Training Center. Church leaders have determined that, due to a number of complexities and concerns, we will not move forward with the nine-story building originally proposed.

Expansion of the MTC is necessary but we are confident we can find a solution that builds upon the long-standing working relationship between the MTC, BYU, and the community at large. We look forward to further discussions as the process moves forward.”

Several neighbors voiced concerns over the project, saying the new building would obscure views and lower property values.

After a letter from local leaders was read to congregations in the area, some voiced concern over the tactic.
