SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Just 2 weeks ago, they supported him for president.

But now, Republicans are quickly distancing themselves from Mitt Romney.

In fact, several attacked him over the weekend.

Newt Gingrich was critical of Romney, as was Senator Lindsey Graham and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.

Romney is now learning one of the tough lessons of a presidential campaign.

When you lose a presidential election, the party you led leaves.

Kirk Jowers, the Director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics told ABC 4,

"If it can be Romney's fault, instead of trying to solve the problems within the party and the country, that's obviously the easiest way to get back to business as usual."
Jowers worked with Romney's campaign for years.

He now cautions those who may already be looking towards 2016,

"The ones who are most critical don't get their turn in four years."

Interestingly, Jowers praises Jon Huntsman,

"I haven't heard him take a single pot shot at Romney since the election. Instead, he has been talking about some of the things Republicans need to fix."

Finally, we asked Jowers if Romney would ever come back to Utah to visit.

He told us that, since the election two weeks ago, Ann Romney already has,

"What could be a better way of spending this very difficult time, absorbing the impact of a loss then with your loved ones.”
