SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (ABC 4 News) - If you're like most people, you probably set a New Year's resolution to get in shape. However like most people it's probably not your first time.
So if you're saying to yourself - "this year is going to be different,” ABC 4 spoke with trainers at Lifetime Fitness to show you how to do it right.
Everybody's doing it.
"It's always busier on the Monday, the Monday after New Year's," said Casey Ruff, Personal Trainer, Lifetime Fitness.
They've all got a New Year's resolution.
"I gotta lose about 30 pounds," said Rich Holland, gym attendee.
"Get healthy and have lots of energy," said Katie Wright, gym attendee.
"I want to do another competition, another body building show," said Melissa Sherman, gym attendee.
Many begin brimming with optimism.
"Do you think you're going to make it?” ABC 4 Reporter Brian Carlson asked.
“Heck yes I am!" said Wright.
But it's not long before trainers said most end up throwing in the towel.
"People start giving up around 5 to 6 weeks that I've noticed. By March it's pretty much back to the usuals that were here before," said Ruff.
So how do you avoid that happening to you? Trainers said the key to making your New Year's resolution stick, is not to over do it.
"Most people work out too hard and they’re not burning the fat they want, get frustrated and start to work out a little harder and that's how people get injured," Ruff said.
They said it also helps to pick an exercise you like. If you fall for yoga, do yoga. If you like to run, hit the treadmill. You just got to get started.
"It's always hard to start in January but you got to start somewhere," said Tiffany Gollmer, Riverton resident.
Once you get going, don't stop.
Here's a final tip from trainers, if your resolution is to lose weight. They said you should set a goal of one to two pounds a week.
