PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Police said two handguns were found near an elementary school Wednesday morning.
According to police, one gun was found in a crosswalk near Sunset Elementary School on 1600 West 600 South by a student. The eight-year-old boy picked it up, put it in his backpack, and brought it to a crossing guard.
Police said the second gun was found on the street at 1100 West 600 South by a woman who picked it up and took it home before calling police.
Police said the guns were a 9mm and a .20 automatic, each of which were not loaded.
Provo Police Sgt. Matthew Siufanua later said that the gun's owner contacted the department to claim them.
Siufanua said the owner lost both guns because he was apparently cleaning his vehicle and placed the weapons on the top of his car.
Siufanua said the the owner claimed he'd forgotten they were there as he drove down the street.
