WEST JORDAN, Utah, (ABC 4 News) - If you're a parent worried about your children getting hit by a car while they're out trick-or-treating, you have a valid concern. Studies released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show when it comes to cars and kids, Halloween is the deadliest day of the year.

On Halloween night when kids come to your door, you know what they want. Kids get so excited for trick-or-treating, some forget cars are still on the road.

"I always have to hold his hand, and make sure he doesn't run or bolt down the street," said Sandra Diaz, parent.

"I make sure that he looks both ways, which he didn't do, he almost got hit by a car crossing the street here," said Lisa Riley, parent.

These West Jordan parents have good reason to worry, on Halloween trick-or-treaters are four times more likely to be hit by a car than any other day of the year. In fact, it was on 4880 W. 5475 S. West Jordan that two teenage girls were hit by a car while trick or treating. Witnesses said the intersection was too dark.

"There isn't enough lighting," said Cheryl Van Slyke, witness.

"There are more lights at my house than the entire road," said Ernesto Gonzales, witness.

Shortly after, officials installed a bigger brighter street light. Neighbors say it's helping.

"Now that they put that in there, it's a lot brighter," said Carrie Huett, neighbor.

"It makes a lot of difference," said Paul Van Slyke, neighbor.

"I think it helped a whole lot," said Cheryl Van Slyke.

As much as the new light helps, parents in West Jordan they're teaching their children to stay extra cautious.

"I try to tell my kids cars don't look out for you, you look out for cars," said Susan Lam, parent.
