LOGAN, Utah (ABC 4 News) – Drivers involved in a serious crash on Highway 89 in Layton Tuesday night had some help thanks to a couple of good samaritans.

It was around 7:45 p.m. when a driver of a white truck was making a left onto Cherry Lane and was hit by a semi truck. The semi careened through the nearby Sinclair gas station parking lot, just missing the pumps but not the huge Sinclair sign up an embankment.

Maegan Lutz was one of the first on the scene. She was at a BBQ just up the street when she heard the crash.

"All of the sudden you hear boom and you could hear the semi truck just sliding; forever it seemed like,” said Lutz.

Lutz, her husband and her brother in law, who are both firefighters, ran to help.

"The first thing you see is the SUV, the white truck,” said Lutz. “It was horrible! You would have thought he was dead."

Gavin Rigby and his father thought the same thing. They were outside in their garden when the semi came barreling towards them.

Rigby said, "Just a lot of metal screeching, it was a horrible noise. Thinking we were going to die because it was coming over the top and thought it was going to keep coming."

The semi, and its engine which came loose, stopped right in their backyard. The semi’s driver was able to get out but the passenger was trapped; luckily the off duty firefighters were there to help.

Lutz said, "The passenger was stuck from the waist down, so he went in there and help up his head and calmed him down and said ‘you know the firemen are coming, take a deep breath, everything is going to be okay.’"

Everything did turn out okay; all three involved only received minor injuries. Lutz says it should have been much worse.

"He had angels with him. He should have been hurt a lot more than what he did. They were all very lucky,” said Lutz.
