WEST JORDAN (ABC 4 News) - A very special member of the West Jordan Police Department is retiring. Kuffs the K9 had an impressive run, but now she needs to be replaced. But a new dog costs a lot of money and on Saturday the community pitched in to help.

“They do a great service for West Jordan City,” said Mike Searle, owner of Pendleton's Towing.

Long time businesses in West Jordan held a fundraiser to help replace the latest K9 to hang up her collar.

A third broken canine tooth is all it took for Kuffs’ five-year career to come to an end.

In front of crowds, Kuffs demonstrated what she's been able to do during her time on the force, including hundreds of drug seizures, attacking fleeing suspects, even helping to find lost children.

One of Kuffs' most prominent successes was her involvement in last year's seizure of approximately $230,000 of drug money from a storage unit.

“We know that these dogs have an important purpose,” said Searle. “Our city really needs these animals.”

Getting a replacement pup can cost up to $10,000. Fundraiser organizers hope to put a dent in that with Saturday’s event.

“We know they need this animal for their division,” said Stan Ware, owner of Dave's Body Shop. “We just want to do everything we can to support them and keep our community safe.”
