PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Fire breaks out at a popular hotel in Provo. A wing of the La Quinta Inn caught fire early Wednesday morning, and gave several tenants quite a scare.
Flames and firefighters weren't exactly the early morning wake up call people at the La Quinta Inn in Provo on University Ave. were expecting.
"I opened the door and smoke was heavy already," said Mark Sprenger, visitor staying at La Quinta.
Just after 6:00 a.m. a fire broke out in an empty room of the inn's west wing. Fire fighters who first responded arrived to roaring flames.
"It broke the windows out, which means it was generating a lot of heat," said Gary Jolley, Deputy Fire Chief, Provo Fire Dept.
Fire fighters said the center of the damage was confined to the vacant room. They said only one person was in that entire section of the inn, and she just happened to be near the room on fire.
"They kept telling her just wait, hang tight. She had her door shut, so she was okay, but you could tell it was smokey and she kind of panicked," said Sprenger.
Crews used a ladder to get the woman out of her second story room, and fire fighters quickly put out the flames, before it did further damage to the building.
As for what caused this fire, investigators believe a heater near the window may be to blame.
