SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - In July, 4-year-old Carson Cheney died after a freak accident in Park City, as a tombstone fell on the little boy.

Now, his family is carrying on his legacy, with the gift of bikes.

Students from Fremont Elementary School work with Franklin Covey and their Education Team teaching the kids leadership skills.

Fourteen kids were chosen for overcoming huge challenges and took home a gift from Carson, a new bike and bike helmet.

For the students, this is just the next step in their life changing lesson and experience.

Fremont Elementary's principal Paul McCarty said, "These are Title One kids, we have 29 different languages, 50 different cultures in our schools and with this program they are becoming more college and career ready. They are going to make it."

In the middle of Friday's project was Carson's Mom, Dad and older brother.

They told ABC4 about their son and brother.

Hilary Cheney said, "He was this tough almost 5 year old who was going off these great big jumps that scare adults."

The family was taking pictures near the cemetery in Park City, when the horrific and unimaginable accident happened.

Hilary said, "We never thought anything like this would have happened, I would have never taken him there if I knew there was danger."

The family is choosing to keep Carson's legacy alive by serving others.

Zac Cheney said, "We know that he is here with us, just so proud to do something like this in his honor."

My son was awarded one of this bikes for an essay he wrote. I just want to say thank you so much to the Cheney family. How humbling it is to be a part of this. How excited all those kids were. One kid told me he was so excited to have a bike before he had to go in for a kidney transplant in 3 weeks. I hope the Cheney family knows what a positive impact they are making for these kids. That boy was so excited he would't have to walk to school while on dialysis. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. My prayers will always be with you.
