SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Are liquor laws about to loosen up a little in Utah?

ABC 4 News has learned that nearly 100 liquor licenses may soon be available for needy restaurants.

Right now, new restaurants can't open because there aren't any liquor licenses.

But sources tell ABC 4 that talks are currently being held at the highest capitol levels.

On the table is a proposal to create 90 new liquor licenses.

50 would reportedly allow restaurants to serve all types of alcohol.

40 would be for wine and beer only.

Melva Sine, the head of Utah’s Restaurant Association, told ABC 4 last month that the licenses are badly needed, that the situation is,

“Reaching a critical point.”

ABC 4 News is also being told the 90 new liquor licenses could be voted on Wednesday at a special legislative session, but that creating more alcohol enforcement for the licenses still needs to be worked out.

Now, in order to get this done Wednesday, the governor must call a special session 48 hours in advance.

In other words, by about 1pm Monday.

But if last minute details can't be worked out, the issue of new liquor licenses may have to wait for the end of the summer.
