COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah (ABC4 News) – Cottonwood Heights Police shot a pitbull outside its home Sunday night. They say he was attacking Border Collie and was dangerous. But, the pitbull’s owner says he was simply protecting his family.

Nova Guymon says her two-year-old pitbull, Rednose, is a good, family dog.

“He's just protecting his territory,” said Guymon.

Last night Guymon says her granddaughter opened the front door and Rednose bolted when he spotted a Border Collie outside.

“He protects the little kids. And when she came out and he saw the other dogs he was protecting her,” said Guymon.

Rednose attacked. A police officer in the neighborhood heard the commotion and reacted. He shot his tazer, missed Rednose and hit the Border Collie. That’s when he pulled his gun and shot Rednose in the shoulder. Rednose took off to the backyard of his house.

“He was gushing blood out of his shoulder and he just knelt down and he just wanted his daddy. He's our baby,” said Guymon.

Where the question lies is did this happen on Guymon’s property or did Rednose leave his area and pose a threat to the public? Guymon says it happened on the side of her driveway on her property.

“So, why is the dog hair in my yard if it didn't happen here?” asked Guymon.

Police say that’s just not the case.

“That would be inaccurate. The two people who were walking their dog on leash legally minding their own business,” said Sgt. Gary Young of Cottonwood Heights Police Dept.

Police say they had to shoot Rednose to stop it from being a danger to the public or other pets.

“There was no way he had left this property and he wouldn't have bolted if the dog hadn't been on the property. It's a lie,” said Guymon.

The good news is Rednose and the Border Collie are said to be okay.

Now, Guymon has talked to an attorney and wants Cottonwood Heights Police to pay for her $4,000 vet bill because she says it’s their fault. Police say they did what they had to do and will not be footing the bill.

Actually if the hair was on the pits property that is proof enough. if a dog walks into another dogs territory and gets attacked its the wandering dogs fault. Where were the collies owners HUH??????????? the border collie was in the wrong yard. so he was actuall in the wrong reguardless. plus if s human shot a human they do indeed look at where the shell falls just like the hair. the hair proved the collie was indeed present in a yard he should not have been in. the pit was in the right because it was his yard and his family on his grass that HE marks. It was his yard just like you can shoot some one when they enter your house thats all the dog was doing.

The dog wouldn't have attacked a 2 year old wandering onto his property. He plays with little kids all the time. He is really good with them. He is just a puppy

Attacking a dog walking down the sidewalk is not "protecting" your family.

Don't start talking trash on the pit, until you know the true facts of this story. I can tell you now alot of it was clipped out. I'm sorry but if a child is outside in her and the dogs own yard and another dog off the leash comes in the territory of that dogs and his families yard. Any dog would feel threatened. He was protecting his family in his own yard!

If your pit bull, or any dog, runs out the front door because you can't control it, and it starts attacking a two year old that wandered onto your property then it's ok? Just protecting the yard, right?

So walking down the sidewalk with your dog on leash now gives any violent dog the right to attack because he is protecting your yard? Dog should be put down and the owner needs her head examined.

Okay, Real Talk - You really need to educate yourself. Barbaric animal??? Do you know anything about the "pitbull breed"? Until you do, I suggest you keep your ignorant statements to yourself. IT'S THE HUMANS THAT MAKE THESE DOGS AGGRESSIVE!!!! My daughter owns two of them and they are the most loving, sweet dogs ever! My Golden is more aggressive than her pitbulls. And for the record, ANY breed of dog is capable of an attack. As for the police officer that shot the dog, I think that was a little extreme. Other measures could have been used to break up the dog fight.

F*ck Pit-bulls! Thank god he shot your dog...why anyone would own a "dog" that could kill something at will is beyond me. Barbaric animal!

Also, the border collie was NOT on a leash! In fact the owners were cited for not having him on a leash. The pit bull is a sweet playful puppy just protecting his territory and family.
