PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Police say three former BYU football players were charged Thursday in connection with a Halloween night brawl at a Mexican restaurant.

According to police, at approximately 3:00 a.m. on November 1, officers received a report of an alleged assault at the Rancherito restaurant located at 1314 North State Street in Provo.

When officers arrived, many of the involved parties had already left.

During their investigation, police say they obtained video of the incident that was used to identify the individuals and witnesses involved on both sides of the altercation.

After completing the investigation, the Provo City Attorney’s Office screened the case and filed misdemeanor charges of assault against 20-year-old Matthew Santos, 21-year-old Alexander Jackman, 21-year old Zachary Stout, and 23-year-old Joe Sampson.

Stout and Sampson were members of the BYU varsity football team at the time of the fight. Both were suspended from school and kicked off the team when word of the fighr got to BYU officials.

Santos is a former walk-on player with the BYU football team.

Another BYU player seen in the restaurant surveillance video as trying to break up the brawl was not charged, but was suspended for one game by head coach Bronco Mendenhall.
