SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Children’s jewelry such as necklaces, pendants, earrings, or bracelets may seem harmless but a new study shows select children’s trinkets made in China could be tainted with a chemical called cadmium and it may make your children very sick.

According to reports enough exposure to cadmium could cause cancer, or kill kidneys.

Monday, Reporter Brian Carlson told parents how journalists with the Associated Press discovered you can buy these products in jewelry stores across the country.

“That’s scary,” said Jennifer Coleman, North Salt Lake resident.

“I certainly wouldn’t want that type of stuff on my kids,” said Nate Gardner, Highland resident.

“I would probably be nervous if I thought one of my children was buying that,” said Sydney Fonnesbeck, Salt Lake City resident.

AP writers claim the Consumer Protection Safety Commission has known about the tainted trinkets for years, has assisted in some minor recalls, but has done little to warn the public. Something parents ABC 4 spoke to found appalling.

“So if they haven’t done that then yah I think that that’s failing on their part,” said Laura Lincoln, Colorado resident.

“They probably should be more diligent about it,” said Gardner.

“If we know something is dangerous people ought to have the right to know that,” said Fonnesbeck.
