A world traveler and an "Army Brat," Kerry's adventures have spanned the globe. As a child, Kerry lived in Japan, Hawaii, Texas, Louisiana, and Georgia. Growing up in a military family, Kerry developed a tremendous respect for the dedication and sacrifice of our soldiers. His brother is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and is a Colonel in the U.S. Army. After seeing action for a year in Iraq in 2006, Kerry's brother, an Army Ranger, now works at the Army Operations Center at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Kerry's late father fought in two wars and was awarded, among other medals, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and two Purple Hearts. The former prisoner of war retired as a Sergeant Major after nearly twenty-two years in the U.S. Army. After spending his teenage years in Atlanta, GA, Kerry started his broadcasting career as a radio disk jockey, news reporter, and football & baseball play-by-play announcer in South Carolina and Georgia. Those experiences led to jobs as a TV sports anchor/reporter. Among his stops: WHAS-TV in Louisville, KY, followed by WOWK-TV in Charleston/Huntington, WV, where he was the Sports Director. There, he won seven Associated Press Awards in three years, among them: "Best Sportscast" three times and "Outstanding Sports Operation" once. Kerry then switched from sports to his original love—hard news. He worked as an anchor/reporter at CN8 News in Philadelphia, PA. In 2002, Kerry made the move to Houston, Texas, where he became the weekend anchor/reporter for a 24-hour news channel. At News 24 Houston, Kerry anchored coverage of the scheduled landing and break up of Space Shuttle Columbia, the hunt for shuttle debris in East Texas, Hurricane Erika, and the unraveling of energy giant Enron. In 2004, Kerry jumped at an opportunity to give back to others. He accepted a job as the Senior Television Instructor and Avid editing teacher at the Atlanta campus of the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. He utilized his many years of experience to show pupils how to shoot, write, edit, report, and anchor newscasts and sportscasts. He also served as a coach and mentor to hundreds of students aspiring toward lifelong broadcasting careers. Kerry joined the ABC 4 family in February of 2006 and has served as morning co-anchor, weekend anchor, and general assignment reporter. In 2008, he was nominated for a Rocky Mountain Regional Emmy Award for general assignment reporting. Kerry also taped a show in Los Angeles in 2007 for the Fine Living Network. As host of "50 Ways to Cut Your Bills Today," Kerry showed viewers how to rack up savings in every way imaginable. Even though it was a television pilot, the show still appears from time to time on the network. It won a 2008 Gold Remi Award at the 41st Annual Worldfest Houston International Film Festival. Kerry is passionate about his Atlanta and Georgia sports teams—Falcons, Braves, Hawks, Thrashers, and Bulldogs. He says he's been fortunate to cover all of them professionally and to attend hundreds of games as a fan. Kerry's been able to see almost all 50 states. His next goal is to visit every state capital, and he says he's more than halfway there.
